# How to measure any desired point of a family

You can measure to any point of a loadable Families automatically with Smart Dimensions.

In the Family Editor, add a vertical or horizontal reference planes that contain "Sdim" in its name (text that the name should contain can be changed).

![](/files/R223xb2rRpFKnd0BCMYE)

{% hint style="info" %}
The 'Is Reference' parameter of the reference plane must not be equal to 'Not a Reference' for a reference place to be measured.
{% endhint %}

When using Smart Dimensions, select the 'Sdim Ref. Planes' in dimensioning rules and the reference planes will be measured. Here you can also change what needs to be in the reference plane name for it to be measured.
