Migrating Smart Views, Smart Assemblies, and Sort Mark Configurations to Smart Documentation

Starting in 2026, we plan to remove Smart Assemblies, Smart Views, and Sort Mark from all Collections and Suites.

Smart Assemblies (SA), Smart Views (SV), and Sort Mark (SM) are being replaced by Smart Documentation (SD). SD includes all the functionality of the retiring tools—and even a bit more. This change enables a more compact and unified documentation solution in Revit that takes up less space.

From now until early 2026, we’re offering a transition period for moving your configurations from SA, SV, and SM to SD. We encourage you to migrate as soon as possible to avoid issues later on.

This guide walks you through the step-by-step transition process.

1. Are you new to our tools?

If so, simply start using Smart Documentation. It is now the main tool for project documentation.

2. Already using just the Smart Documentation?

Great! Continue using it.

3. Are you using Smart Assemblies, Smart Views, or Sort Mark?

You’ll need to move your configuration files to Smart Documentation.

Smart Documentation uses the same files for configurations but organizes them differently.

Follow the relevant instructions below to move your configurations into the new structure.

3.1. Open Smart Documentation Configurations

Start by opening the Smart Documentation configuration folder. You can find the path to the default configuration files here:

Alternatively, you can set any empty folder as the destination in Configuration Files' Location. After using any Smart Documentation command, sample configurations will be generated in that location.

Open the path of your Smart Documentation's configurations in your file browser. This is how the Smart Documentation configuration folder structure looks:

Keep this folder open—you’ll be copying files into it from your existing tools.

You can create multiple Smart Documentation configuration folders to store different setups from SA, SV, or SM.

3.2. Migrating Sort Mark configurations

Open your Sort Mark configuration folder. You can find the path to it here:

Transfer Sort Mark configurations to Smart Documentation using these steps:

  • Copy the BatchConfigurations folder to [Your Configurations] / Numbering

  • Copy all other folders starting with "OST_" to [Your Configurations] / Numbering / Configurations / Common

After migration, you will find your Sort Mark commands and configurations under the Numbering & Tags menu in Smart Documentation:

3.3. Migrating Smart Assemblies Configurations

Open your Smart Assemblies configuration folder. You can find the path to it here:

Transfer Smart Assemblies configurations to Smart Documentation using these steps:

  • Copy the DimensioningConfigurations and WorkshopDrawingConfigurations folders to [Your Configurations] / Assemblies

  • Copy Imperial and/or Metric folders from Smart Dimensions to [Your Configurations] / Dimensions

  • Copy Imperial and/or Metric folders from Smart Tags configs to [Your Configurations] / Tags

After migration, you’ll access your Shop Drawing Configurations and use Smart Assemblies commands from the Assembly Views menu. Smart Dimensions and Smart Tags will be available via the Predefined Dimensions and Numbering & Tags menus:

3.4. Migrating Smart Views Configurations

Smart Views has two configuration locations (Smart Dimensions are specified separately). Open both folders — you can find the paths here:

Transfer configurations to Smart Documentation using these steps:

From Smart Views configurations:

  • Copy the Sheets folder to [Your Configurations]

  • Copy the Tags folder to [Your Configurations]

  • Copy the Views folder to [Your Configurations]

From Smart Dimensions configurations:

  • Copy Imperial and/or Metric folders to [Your Configurations] / Dimensions

After migration, your Smart Views commands will be accessible from the Views menu, and Smart Dimensions and Smart Tags from Predefined Dimensions and Numbering & Tags menus:

4. Multiple Sets of Configurations

Do you have more than one set of configurations?

Simply create additional Smart Documentation configuration folder structures and move each set of configurations there, following the same steps as before.

Test Smart Documentation & Get Support

Once migration is complete, test the functionality:

  • Confirm that your configurations appear correctly.

  • Ensure they behave the same as before.

If anything doesn’t work as expected, please submit a support ticket and we’ll assist you.
