Shop Drawing Workflow

1. Numbering

After framing walls, you must Number Walls and Number Elements. Learn more

The order of numbering does not matter. However, it's recommended to number walls first. Learn more


2. Load Tags and Schedule Templates

Metal Framing comes with sample Structural Framing Tag family and Schedule templates that can be used in the Drawing Configuration.

Follow the steps below:

  1. Navigate to Settings > Load Families

  2. Uncheck Main Families

  3. Check the Sample Schedules and Sample Tags boxes

  4. Click OK

  5. Sample schedules will appear in the Schedules section of the Project Browser

2.1 Structural Framing Tag family

The family is used in Smart Tags configurations:

Smart Tags configuration will be used in Drawing Configuration > Views Tag > Tagging Config:

2.2 Schedule Templates

Sample schedules and material takeoffs are templates that can be used in Drawing Configuration > Schedules tab:


3. Setup View Templates

View Templates will be used in Drawing Configurations > Views tab for your assembly views:

3.1 Use your own view templates

If you already have view templates for Elevations/Sections, Floor Plans and 3D Views, you can skip this step.

3.2 Create new view templates

Create View Templates for each view (Elevation/Section, Floor Plan and 3D View). It's recommended to open a specific view with a framed wall and follow these steps:

  1. Change the Scale

  2. Increase the Detail Level to Fine

  3. Hide various family categories (e.g. Levels)


  1. In Revit ribbon, View tab > Graphics section > View Templates > Create Template from Current View

  2. Name your template

  3. Modify Visibility/Graphics. Read the tips below:

Model Categories

  • Structural Framing (for studs, plates, etc.)

  • Structural Connections (for angles, bolts, etc.)

Annotation Categories

  • Dimensions

  • Structural Framing Tags


4. Setup Drawing Configurations

Note: Metric and Imperial configurations have different settings

5. Create Assembly

  1. Click Create Assembly and pick a framing element from a chosen frame.

  2. Go to the new assembly in the project browser. Drag and drop the views and schedules onto the sheet:
