Smart Views Menu

In Smart Documentation, the Smart Views commands can be found under the Views group. If you are using Smart Views from other tools, the menu may appear slightly different, but all menus include the same commands.

Smart Views operates based on configurations, which define what types of views to create and their properties. Users can set up different configurations for specific tasks, reuse them as needed across projects (even in different Revit versions), and collaborate with colleagues on shared configurations.

Create Views

The Views Configuration command opens a window where you can define what views to create, along with their properties and tagging/dimensioning rules.

This article mainly explains what the different menu commands do. Click here to learn more about the configuration window and its settings, and here for a step-by-step guide on setting up Views configurations.

To run one of your configurations, use either the Create Single-Element Views or Create Multi-Element Views commands.

Here are the differences between the two:

  • Create Single-Element Views creates a set of views (as specified in the configuration) for each instance selected in the model. The boundaries of each view are sized according to the element for which the view is being created. This is useful when dimensioning individual loadable families (Windows, Doors, Structural Columns, etc.) or system families—for example, a set of views for every wall (hosted elements can also be included).

  • Create Multi-Element Views creates one set of views for all elements selected in the model. The boundaries of the created views are sized to accommodate all selected elements. This is used for creating views for groups of elements—for example, a run of Walls, a run of MEP elements, or a group of Furniture or Casework.

Create Single-Element Views automatically determines the orientation of created views (Front, Back, Left, Right, Top, Bottom) using family data. When using Create Multi-Element Views, multiple elements are involved and only one set of views is created. For that reason, you need to select one element to define the orientation of the views.

Update Views

When either of the Create Views commands is used, it populates the elements with metadata about which configuration was applied and whether it was Single-Element or Multi-Element. This metadata is later used by the Update and Delete commands.

To make batch edits to created views, use either the Update Single-Element Views or Update Multi-Element Views command, depending on which Create Views command was originally used. These commands will redo views for the selected elements according to the changes made in the configuration.

Update Single-Element Views (result before → updating views → result after):

Update Multi-Element Views (result before → updating views → result after):

When updating Multi-Element Views, it’s sufficient to select just one element from the group and run the command.

With the update commands, you can implement configuration changes such as:

  • Change view orientation or rotation

  • Add or remove views

  • Change view names and view templates

  • Assign, remove, or change tagging/dimensioning configurations

  • Isolate elements or categories

  • Control the crop region

Update commands can also be used if elements for which the views were created have changed, or if more elements have become visible in the views and tagging or dimensioning configurations need to be reapplied.

Delete Views

The Delete Views command deletes views (both Single-Element and Multi-Element) created with the Smart Views functionality from selected elements. This command does nothing to views that were created manually in Revit.
